President's Message
AzAHPERD 2010: A Decade for Strength through Teamwork and Partnerships
Welcome to 2010 - the start of a new decade with the hope of healthier lives for all. Your AzAHPERD Board of Directors is dedicated to a 3 year strategic plan that includes advocacy for healthier students, faculty/staff and families, offering more to our AzAHPERD members as well as increasing our membership and the development of partnerships with those that are involved with health, wellness and physical activity.
One of our most important partnerships involves the American Heart Association and Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart. Through your participation in Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart, you are supporting your AzAHPERD Organization and your membership. If you are a Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart coordinator and/or participant, you should consider partnering with AzAHPERD! These two organizations are married through the National AAHPERD and AHA and support each other educationally and financially. If you are unfamiliar with JRFH/Hoops for Heart, please email me! It's simple, fits into your curriculum and already designed lesson plans and it's a great teaching event!
We have already begun our work to build strength through partnerships with other organizations in Arizona. If you attended the 87th State Convention this past September, then you experienced one of our partnerships with the Arizona Diamondbacks! Mark your calendars for spring training and the 2010 Diamondbacks season and special events planned for Arizona AHPERD members!
February also opens the door to our newest partnership with the Phoenix Suns! We will be holding an AzAHPERD members game night Friday, February 26th. Tickets will be available at a discounted rate so bring your family and friends for a great evening of fun and the Suns!
With a grant from the CDC, the Arizona Dept. of Education has created the Coordinated School Health Program for Arizona. Check your email this week for news on the upcoming PIPELINE and Coordinated School Health workshops this January in Prescott! Don't forget the upcoming Adaptive Physical Education Conference February 4-5 and Pushing the Boundaries Conference in Flagstaff April 29-30. Take advantage of these conferences with organizations that AzAHPERD supports and partners with. Other partnerships we are working on include the American Academy of Sports Medicine and the Valley of the Sun YMCA.
Your AzAHPERD Board of Directors is here for you. Please let us know how we are doing, how we can help you and how and what you are doing! We are members of your team for 2010!
Healthy Regards,
Kathy Dean, BA, MS
